David Martin, Chief Executive of Arriva
David qualified as an accountant in 1977 after graduating in business studies. He held a variety of general management positions before joining the bus industry in 1986. After leading a management buy-out of an East Midlands based bus company, he was involved in the acquisition of National Express and subsequent management buy-outs leading to the creation of British Bus Group Limited. David joined Arriva in 1996 on the acquisition of British Bus, becoming a member of the Board in February 1998 with specific responsibility for the group’s international operations and development.
In March 2005 he was appointed group managing director – operations and deputy chief executive, and on 19 April 2006 was appointed chief executive.
David Evans, Managing Director Southern Europe
David graduated in civil engineering from Birmingham University in 1987. He joined Arthur Young (now Ernst & Young) in 1987 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1991. He then moved to Paris to work for Schlumberger, working on acquisitions in Europe / Pacific Rim for three years, returning to the UK with Schlumberger in 1994 as financial director of a newly acquired service business.
In 1997 he joined the bus industry as financial director of a 1,000 bus operator in Liverpool. He joined Arriva in 2000, initially as finance director of the group’s mainland European operations working alongside the managing director on growth strategy.
He was part of the team that developed Arriva’s acquisitive and organic growth in the following years working with operations. In 2006 David progressed to the role of managing director Southern Europe, covering operations in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
Tony Williamson, Executive Director of Arriva in Spain
Tony Williamson, 44, is responsible for Arriva in Spain. He has dedicated his whole life to the passenger transport sector. He started at 16 as a mechanic’s apprentice and went on to become garage manager in Midlands Fox, Leicestershire, and later as Engineering Manager at Stagecoach.
In 1991 he set up his own business in Sheffield with seven vehicles. Four years later the company had 140 buses. Later, he took part in a co-operative – Kelvin Central Buses – with 1,000 employee shareholders. He joined Arriva in 1997 as Managing Director of Arriva’s bus services in Scotland. Before becoming Executive Director of Arriva in Spain, he was Deputy Managing Director of Southern Europe.
