Arriva, innovation in public transport

As a public transport operator, our main competitor is the car. Of course, the car has its place in society however everyone benefits from a more balanced use of different forms of transport.

m-ticket.jpgTo encourage more people to use our services, we have to be creative. We have to use our expertise and knowledge to introduce new and exciting ideas to increase the attraction of travelling by bus or by train:

  • The majority of our buses have a Global Positioning System (GPS) to control punctuality, timetables and avoid traffic congestion.
  • In Spain, we offer a free Internet connection via Wi-Fi to passengers who travel between A Couña and Ferrol.
  • In the United Kingdom we have a driving simulator, similar to a flying one, which is used to train and select the best drivers for our buses.
  • In Denmark and The United Kingdom we have installed Black Boxes which collect all the information necessary in the case of an accident.
  • In Kent, we manage the public transport system Fastrack, with lanes reserved exclusively for the buses as well as signs giving them preference at intersections.
  • On the Kent Fastrack, we are trying out a method of buying tickets on mobile phones: m-ticket.
  • In Yorkshire, the“Yournextbus” system allows users to use their mobiles to consult when their next bus is due in real time.
  • In London, we have a control centre which enables the localisation of all 1500 buses of the company at any one time. And it also recommends alternative routes to the drivers in the case of traffic congestion.
  • In Cremona (Italy), our buses have a technology integrated into the traffic light system which turns the light green when the bus approaches.
